This story really touched my heart. I am writing it exactly as it was written and published by the Associated Press on 12/16/09.
TYLER, Texas — Thieves who ransacked a house in Tyler were so thorough that they even stole the family dog's treats.
Some police officers who responded to the burglary took on the spirit of the season and used their own money to buy replacement Christmas presents.
Police are seeking the burglars who broke into the home of Erika Velazquez and her family, stealing her husband's wedding ring, electronics and presents for her 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son.
Velazquez on Tuesday told the Tyler Morning Telegraph that her daughter, Estefanie, asked if police would go door to door to find the stolen gifts.
The investigating officers returned later with presents they purchased for the youngsters.
Tyler Police Chief Gary Swindle says he's proud of his officers and "stories like this sure makes Christmas a whole lot better."
